Home Burglary Doesn’t Happen Just At Night.

A burglary can happen day or night, but the odds are it’s going to happen during the day when you are away from home.

A study in Houston conducted by Apartment WIZ found that 72% of burglaries during a one month period took place during the day.  The study also found that most burglaries actually took place between the hours of 7am and 10am in the morning when the homeowner was away.

The results of such studies may be surprising.  Most of us have the misconception that the majority of burglaries happen at night, under the cover of darkness.  Certainly burglaries do occur at night and having the proper lighting outside your home can help deter a burglary.  However, the driving factor in daytime burglaries is that the criminals are banking on nobody being home.  Another unsettling fact, according to information from law enforcement and criminal lawyers is that most criminals of a home and simply wait for the occupants to leave for work or school.  They have done prior surveillance on your neighborhood and your home and are familiar with your patterns and routines.

To deter a burglary during the day, have an appropriate burglar alarm installed, be sure to arm it when you leave the home, even for a moment, close and lock all doors and windows and be sure you have high quality deadbolt locks installed on all exterior doors.  Keeping your curtains, draperies or shutters closed will make it more difficult to determine if anyone is home.

Hi David,

Interesting, as we do often assume burglaries are night-time occurrences. Having said that, the one burglary I’ve experienced here in London (back in 1999) was during the day – we were all away at work.
And when I lived in South Africa, my parents house was burgled 5 times in 4 years … each time during the day.

I’m glad I work from home – I can be a burglar deterrent ;-)

Best wishes
Tracey
